Mageo: Travel Anywhere in the World and Conquer the Virtual Land Around You
“Veni, Vedi, Veci,” (“I came, I saw, I conquered”) said Julius Caesar after a quick, decisive victory on a foreign battlefield. Now you can say the same thing by traveling anywhere in the real world and leaving your mark by using the Mageo mobile app to conquer the corresponding virtual territory around you.
Think of it as somewhat like the popular Geocaching game, where players hunt for and find small hidden treasures in the real world based on GPS coordinates. But instead of treasure hunting, you will use Mageo and your cell phone to geo-locate your exact position wherever you happen to be, then set about exploring and/or claiming the virtual Mageo territory immediately adjacent to you.
For a primer on conquering virgin islands, see our post: “How to Colonize a Virgin Island.” You can only reach these uncharted islands via your airship. To get started, you must log onto Mageo on your cell phone using our app, and have location services enabled (you’ll be asked if you want it turned on before your airship takes off). Then, when you take off, you’ll see a “virgin island” button that will land you on the nearest one. They are the easiest to claim, but you can also land on inhabited, already-developed islands and attempt to conquer them, which can be considerably more difficult depending upon how well defended it is.
If you were to go on vacation in, say, Barcelona, you could stroll around neighborhoods like the Gothic Quarter or walk down La Rambla and use your cell phone to quickly locate and explore all of the nearby islands (see image, above). You can play the normal minigames here, colonize a virgin island, or if you’re feeling ambitious conquer an inhabited island. Also, look out for content and comments posted by the island’s owner and visitors for valuable travel and culture tips. Be sure to bookmark favorite places that you discover so you can conveniently travel back there with a single click.
You, too, can leave your mark on a territory you’ve conquered by uploading links and photos or videos you’ve shot there. If you were in New York City, for example, and discovered a favorite cafe or, say, Trump Tower happens to be on or near an island you conquered, you can hit the “Content” button on that island’s info card, then add a card or topic and include your post there. Such posts are easy to do and are much appreciated by the citizens of Mageo. All such contributions you make add to your social wealth, thus boosting your position on our leaderboards.
Of course, all of this applies to your hometown as well. You can explore and conquer corresponding virtual territories on your way from school or work to home. It’s fun to contribute your knowledge of your home turf for all to see, and it’s easy to post and recommend your favorite local businesses, notable buildings and landmarks on islands that you own.
With your cell phone and Mageo, you can become a civic leader of your hometown. Claim your territory, build a local empire, and tell everyone what makes it such a special place. Even the most remote locations are filled with unexpected surprises. Or travel to your favorite places and establish a foreign outpost (you have to physically go there, as we do not allow conquering via VPN) and tell us about some of the most fascinating things you’ve discovered there.
